AI Agent Interview Questions

AI agent interview questions are control-flow questions. The interviewer wants the stop condition, the tool allow-list, and what the agent does when a tool returns garbage.

Key takeaways

  • An agent without a step limit will loop
  • Tool errors need a policy, not another retry by default
  • Multi-agent designs need one owner of the final answer

How to use AI Agent Interview Questions

What a good agent answer includes

State the goal, the tools the agent may call, the maximum number of steps, and the memory it is allowed to write. Then say what happens on a bad tool result: retry once, ask the user, or fall back to a safer path. Unbounded retries are a production incident.

If the design uses several agents, name which one is allowed to talk to the user. Handoffs without a single owner produce contradictory answers. That is the follow-up most candidates miss.

Where MCP and RAG show up

MCP questions are agent questions with a sharper edge: which server is trusted, what arguments the model is allowed to pass, and how you audit a tool call. Treat an MCP tool like a privileged API, not like a prompt snippet.

RAG shows up when the agent must look something up before it acts. Say whether retrieval is its own tool with a relevance threshold, or context stuffed into the first message. The threshold is the part that prevents the agent from acting on a near miss.

Frequently asked questions

What are AI agent interview questions?
They cover tool calling, planning, memory, stop conditions, multi-agent handoffs, and a failure story: an agent that looped, called the wrong tool, or leaked an argument it should not have sent.
How should I talk about multi-agent systems?
Explain why one agent is not enough, which agent owns the final answer, and how you cap the conversation between them. More agents is not an architecture.
